Meet the Elders

The Elders in our Church are a friendly group who help organise activities and help the congregation. These 12 elders help make the church what it is today.

I moved to Clitheroe forty years ago and found Clitheroe URC very welcoming.

I have been an Elder for 13 years and have enjoyed seeing how the church has developed and adapted its communal areas to offer a warm welcome to all for worship and community activities.

I have enjoyed my various roles in Clitheroe URC, particularly as secretary to the project group which has guided the Elders in modernising the building and ensuring that all are truly welcome.

I help to lead the ecumenical Thursday lunch time services and provide a link to Synod. My main role now is as Church Secretary. I work with the other Elders to provide pastoral care and church management.

I have been a member of Clitheroe URC since about 1976 together with my husband Geoff. Our youngest daughter and 3 of our grandchildren were baptised here.

I am on my second stint of eldership and now edit the church magazine The Courier. Another involvement is The English Club, teaching English to people from a wide range of nationalities.

I bake and help at the monthly First Saturday cafes at church. I am passionate about environmental matters and a founder member of the Eco Church Group.

I have been worshipping in this church since moving to Clitheroe in the 1980s. I became an elder in the late nineties and have now been the church treasurer for 20 years!

We have good team spirit here whether it be working to update the fabric of the church, in fundraising activities such as our monthly Saturday cafe and hosting concerts or in outreach work such as the winter Warm Space open to all.

I’m a qualified Art Teacher who worked at Broadfield Special School but now run my own charity providing art classes in Clitheroe for adults who are disadvantaged or who have special needs.

I am married with 5 children and 9 grandchildren and live in the beautiful Ribble Valley. I love the outdoors, spending time with my family and of course anything arty!

I transferred my membership to Clitheroe URC from my church in Bolton, when I moved to Clitheroe in 1991 and I was ordained as an Elder in 1994. I have been a serving Elder for most of the time since then.

My two youngest children were baptised here and all three children attended Junior Church until they left home to go off to university. I have a passion for fairtrade and for protecting the environment and I am the church representative on Clitheroe Fairtrade Town Group. I am one of the three co-directors at The Shop of Hope Community Interest Company on Clitheroe main street - a shop selling fairtrade, ethical and local crafts and offering volunteering opportunities. We also offer craft sessions free to the local community with a focus on recycling and reducing social isolation.

I am a member of our church EcoChurch group. We have just been awarded the A Rocha EcoChurch Gold Award.

My links to URC started with Tettenhall Wood URC (Wolverhampton) as a child, where my father was a lay preacher, and I was ordained as an elder in 1985. I moved away from Wolverhampton to pursue a career in clinical psychology and started attending Haslingden URC, until this church sadly closed during 2014. I transferred my membership to Accrington URC, until this church also closed.  I then started attending Clitheroe URC, and became a member in November 2021.  I was attracted by the focus on outreach, team spirit and inclusive nature of the church and ministry, and it felt well worth the travel from Rossendale . I am married, and love the outdoors and now retired from NHS, can often be seen out and about with my golden retriever.

I chair the Eco Church group, am a member of project group,  help out with ‘First Saturday’ cafes, and am secretary for Lancashire Area Pastoral Committee.
